Product Description
15 ppm bilge oily water separator (OWS), 1.00 m3/h treatment capacity, IMO MEPC.107(49) type-approved. Machinery-space bilge treatment for ships over 400 GT per MARPOL Annex I Regulation 14, discharging under Regulation 15 (en route, less than 15 ppm oil in the effluent, without dilution, processed through Regulation 14.7 equipment). IMO Resolution MEPC.107(49) was adopted 18 July 2003 and entered into force 1 January 2005, superseding the earlier MEPC.60(33) 15 ppm specification. Type approval is issued against three challenge fluids: Test Fluid A (marine residual fuel), Test Fluid B (ISO 8217 DMA marine distillate), and Test Fluid C (a stabilised emulsion of surfactant + oil + fine particulates simulating real bilge water). The 15 ppm oil content monitor (OCM) must display a corrected reading within 5 s of a sample-stream change; the automatic 3-way overboard/recirculation valve must divert any non-compliant flow back to the bilge holding tank without operator intervention. Sampling-point clarifications were consolidated in IMO Resolution MEPC.285(70) in 2016 (NOTE: MEPC.240(65) is a separate amendment to MEPC.108(49) for oil-tanker ODMCS, not to MEPC.107(49) for machinery-space OWS). DNV (PSC focus 2023): the statutory sampling point for surveyor inspection must sit in a vertical section of the outlet pipe as close as practicable to the separator; that rule applies to the SURVEYOR inspection point, not to the OCM's own take-off. Standard MEPC.107(49) treatment train (variable by OEM): 1st stage gravity/coalescer separation, 2nd stage coalescing filter for the oil-water emulsion break, 3rd stage polishing (activated-carbon adsorber cartridge, ultra-fine membrane, or high-G centrifugal disc-stack) delivering the final 15 ppm compliance. Standard skid components: feed pump (typically screw or eccentric-progressive-cavity for suspended-solids tolerance), coalescer vessel, polisher vessel, 15 ppm OCM (optical / laser / fluorescence / UV, per OEM), automatic 3-way solenoid or pneumatic overboard valve, tundish/overflow, oil-collection chamber with high-level probe, statutory sampling manifold, and PLC control panel with alarm-event log. OEM landscape for MEPC.107(49) type-approved 15 ppm OWS units: Alfa Laval PureBilge (centrifugal disc-stack — no consumable coalescer; typical 2.5-5.0 m3/h in the main range and PureBilge Compact at 0.6 m3/h; achieves less than 5 ppm typical); RWO/Veolia OWS-COM series (successor to the widely-installed SKIT/S-DEB, coalescer + hydrocarbon adsorber); Wartsila (former Serck Como / Hamworthy) OWS-15 family — OWS-05-15, OWS-10-15, OWS-20-15, OWS-30-15 and OWS-50-15 spanning approximately 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 5.0 m3/h, BV type-approved to MEPC.107(49) and with 96/98/EC; GEA Westfalia BilgeMaster / cleandesign (centrifugal, less than 15 ppm and less than 5 ppm option); Marinfloc CD Unit with TD pre-treatment (flocculation and dissolved air flotation; 15 and 5 ppm variants); Turbulo TMPB (dual 15/5 ppm); plus DVZ-Services, Deerberg-Systems, HAMANN, ULVAC, Hyundai (Hi-Sea), Kwang-San and Coldharbour Marine on the wider industry list. Cataloged capacity range across the industry: 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 m3/h for cargo, container, bulker and passenger-vessel machinery-space service; 10.0 and 15.0 m3/h for tanker machinery-space service where bilge production is higher. Sizing is by expected bilge production, not by vessel deadweight. Type-approval nameplate marks buyers should verify at fitment: with 'wheelmark' with the certifying Notified Body 4-digit code (DNV NB 0575, LR NB 0038, BV NB 0062, RINA NB 0474 — the specific NB varies per approval and is NOT universally '0575'), class type-approval (DNV / ABS / LR / BV / ClassNK / RINA) citing IMO Resolution MEPC.107(49), and US Coast Guard type-approval under 46 CFR 162.050 where the vessel operates in US waters. US regulatory context: 33 CFR 155.380 requires approved 15 ppm equipment on ocean-going ships over 400 GT (with a 10,000 GT threshold for ships not carrying ballast in fuel tanks). 33 CFR 151.10 prohibits any oily discharge within 12 nautical miles of shore. EPA Vessel General Permit (transitioning to VIDA Vessel Incidental Discharge Act standards) adds bilge-water controls for vessels 79 ft and larger: no-sheen prohibition, no toxic dispersants, additional restrictions within 1 nautical mile. Statutory documentation on board: IOPP (International Oil Pollution Prevention) Certificate is mandatory for ships over 400 GT. IOPP Supplement Form A goes to non-tanker cargo ships and lists the OWS make, model, type-approval reference and capacity under Section 2 (machinery-space equipment). IOPP Supplement Form B goes to oil tankers only. Both forms record the same OWS make/model/capacity content on the Section 2 machinery-space page. Sludge tank piping: LR Statutory Alert 29/2016 mandates that the sludge / oil-residue tank must be piped SEPARATELY from the bilge system — no cross-connections to the bilge holding tank, transfer pump line, or OWS. Wear and consumable parts (buyer-relevant reorder schedule): coalescing filter element (typically 6-12 months depending on bilge quality), polishing / adsorber cartridge (activated carbon or emulsion-breaking media, typically 12-24 months — centrifugal designs like Alfa Laval PureBilge eliminate this consumable), OCM sensor measurement cell or cuvette (routine cleaning, annual calibration verification at flag-state and PSC surveys), O-rings, gaskets, feed-pump wear elements, 3-way overboard-valve solenoid coils. Standalone 15 ppm alarm / oil content monitor brands (sold as a spare on ships whose OWS OCM has failed or is being upgraded): Rivertrace Smartsafe, Deckma OMD-2005 and OMD-2008, Brannstrom SAFE-4000, JOWA Bilge Alarm, and Deckma Hamburg 15 ppm alarm. Adjacent equipment usually catalogued and RFQ'd alongside the OWS: bilge holding tank (feed reservoir with high/low level probes), bilge transfer/feed pump matched to skid capacity, dedicated sludge/oil-residue tank (piped separately per LR alert above), statutory sampling manifold with cocks, and the flag-state-required IOPP recording forms. cBallast supplies MEPC.107(49) type-approved 15 ppm OWS units in every catalogue capacity (0.25 through 15 m3/h), matched-brand consumables and replacement OCM sensor units (Rivertrace, Deckma, Brannstrom, JOWA), plus complete pre-treatment and holding-tank ancillary equipment. Request a quote by capacity (m3/h), preferred class-society approval (DNV / ABS / LR / BV / ClassNK / RINA), country flag of the vessel (for the correct with wheelmark NB), and whether the current installation is a coalescer + adsorber design or a centrifugal Alfa Laval PureBilge / GEA BilgeMaster architecture.
