The wiper is the mechanism that sweeps the outside of the quartz sleeve without opening the reactor; on a manual unit the operator strokes this rod through its seal to clear the film that builds on the sleeve. Keeping the sleeve clean is what holds the delivered UV dose up between sleeve changes, because fouling cuts transmittance long before the system reports a fault.
