The gland compresses the seal that closes the quartz sleeve or sensor port against the reactor body. Gland condition governs whether the reactor holds pressure, and over-tightening a gland is a common way to crack a quartz sleeve on reassembly. These are the M4 screws that secure and seal the gland.
