The spacer glass sets and holds the ultraviolet lamp at the correct standoff inside the quartz sleeve. It is made of quartz rather than ordinary glass because it sits in the UV path: soda glass in this position both absorbs UV-C and solarises. Lamp position is part of what the reactor was dosed around, so a missing or broken spacer changes delivered dose even when lamp and sleeve are sound.
